City of New York Ship Carpenter in New York, New York

Job Description

Under supervision of Supervisor Ship Carpenter, performs ship carpentry work aboard vessels and terminals of the Staten Island Ferry; performs related work.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:

Uses and operates all carpentry shop hand and powered machinery, tools and equipment; repairs and erects partitions, doors and windows; works from prints and measurements. Does all necessary wood working repairs and maintenance of ferries, floating equipment, terminals and related buildings; replaces broken glass, constructs and installs scaffolding; constructs and repairs float stages. Install, repair and replace flooring, partitions, window frames and sashes, door frame, door locks and doors, drop ceilings and metal framing of walls, and other related components of buildings and structures including boardwalks, fences and screens.

DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates must pass a drug screening to be appointed. Ship Carpenter are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.

TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. For further program information, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.

Qualifications

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience, acquired within the last fifteen years as a ship carpenter performing construction or repair work in a shipyard, or at a ship repair facility, on a ship or other marine vessel, at a dock, or a waterfront facility or performing related marine carpentry.

Within thirty days of appointment candidates must possess a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential issued by the US Transportation Security Administration.
