Overview
The Controls Designer I is responsible for the design of building automation control systems including System Architecture, Wiring Diagrams, Materials Specifications, Submittals, and Bill of Materials.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include:
Works closely with frequent interaction with clients, contractors, engineers, and project managers to create unique high-level concepts and designs for all assigned projects.
Works closely with the team to ensure the successful execution of goals of all assigned projects.
Delivers concepts and designs according to strict project deadlines.
Contributes to all areas of the creative process and department.
Performs work under direct supervision.
Handles basic issues and problems and refers more complex issues to higher-level staff.
Design and Pre-Construction:
Conduct field surveys to identify existing equipment types and building automation system capabilities.
Produce design documents including drawings, system architecture, and wiring diagrams.
Produce Submittals for review and approval by the Engineer of Record.
Prepare Bill of Materials for Controls Installation project.
Assist with the development of technical reports or related documents.
Uphold Bernhard's owner advocacy philosophy, mission, and core values.
Other duties as assigned or required.
This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and reports to the Logic Director.
Qualifications
Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Engineering
0-2 years of experience
Possesses beginning to working knowledge of the subject matter
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Technical and analytical problem-solving skills
Vision and creativity
Planning skills and ability to meet deadlines
Proficient in AutoCAD
Proficient in Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel
Detail-oriented and willing to tackle various ongoing projects in a fast-paced environment
The ability to perform duties outside of the scope of work when necessary
Preferred Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Building Automation System design experience - Preferred systems include Siemens, JCI, Honeywell, Trane, Struxureware, and Tridium
Experience with HVAC design and commissioning
Experience with building energy engineering including system sequence writing
Experience in common aspects of design in Higher Education and Healthcare
Travel Requirements
- Dependent on project location and needs. Estimated to be up to 50% of regular work schedule per month.
Physical/Work Environment Requirements
The work environment will be a combination of an office environment and site survey environment.
Site surveys will include exposure to external weather, loud noises, and poorly accessible spaces.
Ability to survey confined spaces within a facility to gather necessary information on building equipment.
The use of ladders to survey equipment above ceiling, periodically.

Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.

Pay Range
USD $50,000.00 - USD $66,800.00 /Yr.
