This position will give you exposure to the Life Safety Portfolios, and your efforts will make a direct impact to top line revenue via new products, product enhancements, and technology integrations. This position works directly with Factory, Certification/validation groups, Product group, Mechanical Development and Firmware Deployment teams. This role gives you a platform to be a Project Manager and a Design Our Life Safety team is seeking a Design Engineer that will explore new innovations to be brilliant, be productive, and be connected.

How You Will Contribute

This role is responsible for product development from concept through production, which includes new products, sustaining and resolution of field problems. Electronic product design and/or redesign, part assembly and detailed part drawings. Leads prototyping, testing, and assembly of samples. Leads various product design/development projects and teams. Collaborates with and influences all cross functional members of the design team. Presents and communicates project status updates to management. Participates in daily management meetings with the cross-functional team. LEAN Process methodology is applied to drive impact, streamline, and improve processes.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Evaluate existing and emerging technologies to identify solutions that will reliably operate in a wide range of installed environments.

  • Responsible for product development from concept through production including new products, sustaining and field failures.

  • Communicate design and component constraints and trade-offs to other team members and management, playing an advisory role as a subject matter expert to ensure that optimal design decisions are made. Communicate project status to senior management.

  • Evaluate Intellectual Property (IP) landscape to identify risks created by existing IP and opportunities for creating valuable new IP.

  • Design and support products to relevant electrical code and testing laboratory standards, support ULand CSA testing and listing process for products. Design and support products that comply with FCC part15 and manage submissions for compliance testing.

  • Work closely with manufacturing to ensure that designs meet manufacturability and testing criteria and sustain these products in manufacturing.

  • Develop and distribute engineering data in the form of Engineering Change Notices, Bills of Material and parts tracking.

  • Perform system integration and validation testing activities. Drive validation activities for embedded firmware.

  • Carry the product through the phase gate process managing the deliverables of each phase.

  • Demonstrate a continuous improvement mentality looking for ways to improve current processes related to productivity, quality, purchasing and manufacturing.

  • Develop relationships with matrix partners leading to timely completion of activities.

  • Documenting analysis and testing of new products leading to a quality and robust solution.

  • Design, model and test mixed-signal processor-based electronics; design and source PCBs; specify and source electronic components.

  • Demonstrates personal and team leadership skills, works with little oversight to complete tasks on time and within budget.

Education (minimum education required)

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE), Computer Engineering (CE), or equivalent.

Skills and Minimum Experience Required

  • Knowledge/experience in Power Supply Design (AC-DC), filtering for Surge suppression and FCC compliance.

  • Knowledge/experience in Power Supply design, battery design, light engine design, analog and digital low voltage circuit design, PCB design and layout using Altium or similar software package.

  • Knowledge/Experience of battery chemistry and battery charging.

  • Knowledge/Experience in embedded processor or microcontroller design

  • Experience in modeling, p-spice simulation, circuit analysis, worst case thermal analysis, MTBF and product lifetime expectancy calculation.

  • Demonstrated ability to devise novel technical solutions, lateral thinking (applying known solutions to new problems in related fields), willingness to challenge existing practice (technical, testing, manufacturing), willingness to add new functionalities to existing products or to start entire new product categories.

  • Experience in debugging embedded solutions using tools such as debuggers and scopes.

  • Experience in recreating sporadic types of issues/failures using various debugging techniques.

  • Strong project management skills: demonstrated ability to take projects from start to finish with minimal supervision.

  • Hands on experience with laboratory equipment (Scope, DMM, Power Supplies. Data Acquisition, Thermal Chambers

  • Hands-on experience with soldering and component-level debugging.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Travel Requirements

Able to travel up to 10% of the time as needed for the role.
