This is a full-time, exempt level position.

The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, corn processing complex is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Environmental Specialist.

Job Summary:

The Environmental Specialist reports to the Environmental Manager and supports the Cedar Rapids Corn Complex. While working in both an office and industrial facility environment, the Environmental Specialist supports the plant operations teams in improving and maintaining the site’s environmental compliance programs and Environmental Management System (EMS).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the implementation and sustainment of the site’s EMS program, including, but not limited to, policy, standardization, procedure development, incident investigation, (root cause analysis), continuous improvement and risk reduction efforts, assessments, and training

  • Work closely with plant management, operations, engineering, and environmental groups in developing strategies or solutions for environmental issues such as sustainability goals

  • Work closely with the operations and engineering groups to ensure environmental compliance of federal, state, and local regulations and company requirements

  • Interact with plant personnel to collect/verify routine data necessary for environmental reporting and recordkeeping requirements

  • Follow ADM’s recordkeeping process to maintain records as supporting documents of compliance

  • Assist in permitting activities for the site, including Title V and PSD air permitting

  • Prepare environmental reports such as Title V, Emissions Inventory, TRI, Tier II, CEMS report, GHG report, etc.

  • Interact with environmental consultants and regulatory agencies as needed

  • Identify environmental requirements and needs, and ensure that such are considered in the development of new equipment or facilities

  • Serve as the lead on various environmental projects including pollution prevention, pollution control, and compliance testing

  • Develop and provide required and as needed environmental training to plant personnel and contractors such as Storm Water Pollution Prevention, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure, Spill Reporting, Hazardous Waste, Risk Management, and others as assigned

  • Perform duties in a safe manner, utilizing all approved safety equipment and successfully complete all safety training requirements

  • Familiarize themselves with the hazards in their work area and how to protect themselves and others

Requirements:

  • BS degree in Environmental/Engineering/or related discipline preferred

  • 2-4 years’ experience in an environmental compliance role

  • Previous industrial plant experience

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations with an emphasis on air, waste, water/wastewater management, and hazardous material handling/storage

  • Environmental Management System (similar to a ISO 14001-ready program) development and implementation experience preferred

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to impact and influence others at all levels of the organization

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to work within a team-based work environment

  • Proven ability to assess risk and exercise sound judgment in decision-making

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, occasionally other than normal business (day shift) hours to accommodate plant needs, e.g., training, projects, etc. The Environmental Specialist may be contacted after hours for emergencies.

  • Minimal travel may be required for activities such as meetings and training

  • Proficient with Microsoft programs, with emphasis on Excel
