Position Summary:

The Process Engineer provides shop floor support for manufacturing methods and processes in all operations for assigned machines. Maintains Manufacturing Process Planning documentation and insures the accuracy of labor standards. Initiates improvements in current manufacturing methods and processes to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Creates conceptual designs for fixtures, gages and special tools.

  • Supports process input to design engineering by completing various manufacturing support-related tasks such as tooling fixtures and validation, assuring key characteristics and tolerances are identified.

  • Conducts and/or participates in team meetings to improve products and processes.

  • Utilizes progressive methodology to eliminate variation, such as, Design of Experiment (DOE) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).

  • Conducts process capability studies and develops associated corrective action plans.

  • Completes activities of Lean Sigma projects and process improvements

  • Makes appropriate changes in manufacturing methods, processes and Manufacturing Process Planning documentation when dictated by engineering drawing changes.

  • Documents all changes through the Manufacturing Engineering process control system.

  • Resolves technical production problems on assigned product lines working with shop employees and quality personnel.

  • Maintains all manufacturing process planning documentation for assigned product lines. This includes, bills of material, routings and maintenance of labor standards.

  • Initiates improvements in current manufacturing methods and processes to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs.

  • Interfacing regularly with process development teams by developing manufacturing processes including process flow and outputs, manufacturing process instructions and production documentation.

  • Aiding product development teams with the development of essential production and process control deliverables including: equipment qualification and control, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), process verification and validation, manufacturing documentation (DHR/DMR) and final product release.

  • Assisting in authoring operations plans, product build plans, test protocols and final reports.

  • Understanding and applying engineering tools including: FMEA, APQP, Gage R&R, statistical techniques (Cpk, SPC), design of experiments (DOE) and problem solving (i.e. DMAIC).

  • Supporting the Quality System in respect to production and process controls. Developing Standard Manufacturing Procedures (SMPs), implementing and training others for product specific Work Instructions (WIs), and creating in-process control systems.

  • Provides on-going shop floor support for all machining, metal finishing and assembly methods for assigned product lines.

  • Creates conceptual designs for fixtures, gages and special cutting tools. Conducts tool design reviews with the Senior Manufacturing Engineer, Tooling Team personnel, purchasing personnel, and outside tool suppliers.

  • Completes activities of Lean Sigma projects and process improvements

  • Initiates drawing changes with the product design engineer to improve manufacturing quality to reduce costs.

  • Provides technical support to purchasing personnel and suppliers by interpreting product drawings, initiating the development of manufacturing drawings and resolving technical production problems.

  • Recommends plant equipment acquisitions.

  • Trains shop employees on improvements to manufacturing methods, products and new production equipment.

  • Ensure customer requirements and quality standards are met including but not limited to setting quality objectives as specified by Quality Systems Manual and related training, corrective and preventive actions, problem resolution, design and development, tests, capacity analysis, Implementing and/or following policies and processes, validating and verifying processes.

  • Travel as required for company business transactions.

  • Performs other duties as needed such as print checking, fixture design, etc.

Position Requirements:

  • Four-year Degree in Mechanical Engineering discipline, and at least 2 years of relevant experience in manufacturing environment providing direct manufacturing process support; Master’s Degree preferred.

  • Previous experience using risk management tools such as PFMEA’s or other control plans

  • Knowledge of metal and plastics manufacturing preferred

  • Training and work experience in practices such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), Total Quality Management (TQM), Quality Function Deployment (QFD), Design of Experiment (DOE), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) highly preferred

  • Working knowledge of PC based software (word processing, spreadsheet, project management, statistical, CAD/CAM, etc.)

  • Values others' ideas and experienced working in a team environment.

  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people.

  • Works well under pressure.

  • Must be organized and able to attain results on several projects simultaneously.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
