Summary

Department of Internal Medicine Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at University of Michigan is seeking a highly motivated Research Laboratory Manager. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the research investigators, under the direction of the Principal Investigator to manage the growth of the lab. The laboratory investigates the pathobiology of a variety of lung diseases, including interstitial lung diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and acute lung injury, using basic and translational science approaches. They will work with a broad range of individuals, work independently problem solving and collaboratively. The candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of laboratory operations, ensuring smooth functioning and adherence to protocols. Foster collaborative relationships with research investigators to facilitate project development and execution. Provide leadership and supervision to laboratory staff, promoting a cohesive and productive working environment. Oversee procurement and management of laboratory resources, including equipment, and supplies.

Responsibilities*

Management

  • Interview, select, and train Research team

  • Evaluate the productivity and efficiency of staff members and recommend promotions or other changes in their status.

  • Implement disciplinary measures when necessary, in accordance with institutional policies and procedures.

  • Plan and direct the daily activities of the Research team.

  • Manage team structure, ability to hire, terminate, or promote assigned employees

Laboratory Management:

  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement strategies for improving lab operations and efficiency.

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety standards.

  • Work with ULAM and IRB to maintain institutional protocols for animal management.

  • Monitor and evaluate lab processes to identify areas for improvement and optimization

  • Implement quality assurance measures to uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity and accuracy.

  • Monitoring lab protocols and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) inspections. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Laboratory Operations:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring smooth functioning and adherence to protocols.

  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, and coordinate procurement as needed.

  • Implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and quality in lab processes.

  • Collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders to support ongoing projects and initiatives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree in a relevant scientific field; advanced degree preferred.

  • Previous experience in a leadership or management role within a laboratory setting.

  • Strong understanding of laboratory procedures and protocols.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate a diverse team of professionals.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

  • Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements and safety standards.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
